Samtshe-Djavakheti tour in oldest castles
The Samtskhe-Javakheti region is distinguished by its culture. In ancient times, the region was responsible for the country’s security and was the first to take the blows of an external enemy. The life of the region was formed on the basis of defense, transport and trade routes, and we will see this culture on the excursion. First of all, we will visit the famous Borjomi. The balneological resort, which has become famous throughout the world, fascinates with its greenery and mineral healing water.
Afterwards we will go to Vardzia – a 13th century cave city created by Queen Tamara. The refuge city for 45,000 people carved into the rocks is impressive in its grandeur. We will see how people escaped enemy conquests and were able to live in the underground kingdom completely autonomously.
Rabati Fortress – or Akhaltsikhe Fortress – has been the region’s main city and economic center since the 11th century. 280 years under the Ottoman Empire left its mark on the city’s architecture, lifestyle, and religious loyalty. The complex was completely restored in 2006-2008 and provides an excellent idea of the large-scale buildings of its contemporaries.
